Starter Master Pages
In SharePoint 2007, they were called Minimal Master Pages. Microsoft has a minimal.master page for download. I dowloaded it to see and it’s causing an error when I set it to the Default Master Page. When I look at it in design view using SharePoint Designer 2010, it’s obvious that it’s TOO minimal to be of any real use anway. I suggest using Randy Drisgill‘s Starter Master Pages instead. This is the direct link to the download on codeplex.com with instructions.
Even if you’re going to use an OOTB Master Page, download the appropriate Starter Master Page from Drisgill for the comments and notes. He comments it out very well so you know what every item in the code is for and if you can delete it or not. He also has additional instructions in the comments, which are helpful, even if you’re using v4.master, for example, which is an OOTB Master Page.
